When you're part bird-of-prey, part lion, and supposedly all deadly, there's not much in this world that should frighten you. Right?
Of course, this is untrue. We all have our weak moments, no matter how fearsome our makeup.
Leonard, a young gryphon, has quite a lot to make him anxious. Most of his food sources can fight back. Fire-breathing dragons regularly try to steal his lovely mountain valley home. Other male gryphons are out to battle him for mating rights in the area. Even the lovely females of his species are intimidating.
What is a worried gryphon to do?
He wouldn't want anyone to know it, but sometimes, late at night in the back of his cave, long after the crickets and frogs have stopped singing and the fireflies have gone to bed, Leonard moves aside a nondescript pile of rocks and retrieves a well-worn plush companion. He hugs its soft body close to his own with his birdy front claws, so very tightly. Despite the scaly grip, it never complains, and after a while, Leonard is able to relax and fall asleep.
Of course, a regular old teddy bear has no resonance with a magical beast; Leonard takes comfort in a creature as strangely mismatched with itself as he is.
Come the morning, Leonard wakes to face another day, a little more brave than he felt the previous night, and the rocks are slid carefully back over the well-loved plush platypus.
