Of course, in this most modern era, every wizard was forsaking the days of smelly rats, feather-littering doves, and other small experiment-able creatures. Wizards were creating smaller, more compact workdesk companions using different mixtures of spells and clockwork to better suit their own needs. It was commonplace for most wizards to have an old Meldani's V.1 Crow clanking about or collecting dust on the back shelves in various bits and pieces. After Mr. Meldani had disappeared with his modest fortune (which he had seen as a good idea shortly before the first V.1 Crow went berzerk and caused its keeper to lose an eye and three toes), more and more wizards decided to re-invent the - rather jagged and slightly rusty - wheel by cribbing similar ideas.

It wasn't enough for Wizard Altorites to have a commonplace creation like a metal crow, though. Long he toiled over tiny flames with minuscule hammers, creating tiny bolts of iron with tinier bolts of harnessed lightning.

At last, Wizard Altorites unveiled his creation to his closest friend, and closest rival (it was the same thing in the wizarding world). A small, hand-held copper dragon clicked quietly. It followed direction to perfection, whether Wizard Altorites wished it to hold a quill perfectly steady for two hours, or wash his well-worn socks in scalding water. His friend-rival was amazed, but rather put off, for Altorites had given the thing a laughable cap, with a tiny gear-propeller on top. As Altorites sent the tiny dragon off to re-shelve books that appeared to be fifteen times its own weight, the little propeller whirred.

As word of Wizard Altorites' creation got out, many wizards tried to copy the idea... of course, leaving off the hat, for it was something only a soft old man would add to such a powerful item. Time and time again, the plagiarizers failed, and nobody could figure out why.

Wizard Altorites went down in history as a very rich wizard while leaving his contemporaries confounded. He wondered sadly that a group of men who wore two-foot-tall cones of sparkling star-riddled material on their heads could be so blind to the power of a silly hat.
