Cordy Cares

Description

The wizard returned from the star's crash site with a large blue piece of rock. He set it on his largest table, hmming and squinting over it. He weighed it. He put it in water. He put it in vinegar. He put it in wine. Sometimes, he just sat and watched it do nothing. He hmm'd some more.

All the while, Cordy, his chubby dragon companion, followed the wizard and watched with an eagle's eye.

"I thought you were going to get a star," the dragon squeaked.

"And so I did," said the wizard, and pointed to the lumpy blue stone. "This is what has fallen from the sky. And now I am studying it."

Cordy's eyes grew wider than usual. "That's a star?" He was incredulous. "But stars glow, and that isn't glowing. It's pretty, yes, but it's just sitting there. Rather lacking in the glowing department."

The wizard looked down, his bushy white eyebrows furrowing and coming together like two elderly caterpillars kissing. "Ah," he said, "stars do glow, when they're in the sky. About that, you are correct. But here on Earth, where they fall sometimes, they grow lonely and cold. You wouldn't feel like glowing either, I would surmise, if you fell such a great distance, and left your home behind. If only I could figure out a way to make it glow again..."

That night, when the wizard had left his scrolls and his globes, Cordy snuck from his comfortable stone bed and onto the wizard's largest bench, where the sad lump of rock sat. He poked at it with one little claw, and patted it, and felt how cold it was.

A little glint sparked in the dragon's eye. "I need something," he told the rock. "I'll be right back."

Return he did, waddling on his rear legs as he pulled the wizard's most prized possession - a star-patterned pointed hat - on top of his head. Cordy knew that The Hat made the wizard - without The Hat, a wizard would just be another daft old man who liked dried toad livers a bit too much. Cordy also knew that he had been told many, many times to Never Touch The Hat.

Cordy hoisted himself onto the bench, pulling the blue stone onto his belly, and began to sing to it; gently at first, and then a little more loudly, a sweet, low sound that filled the room. As he sang that dragon lullaby that his mother had sang to him in the egg, his chest grew warm from the effort. He sang, and he sang, and he forgot everything else, even that he had taken The Hat.

Some time later, the wizard awoke, squinting in the morning light. Out of habit, he reached first for his hat, but, finding it missing, threw on his robe angrily and ran into the other room. He knew he shouldn't have ever trusted a dragon to keep its dirty paws off of his prized possessions...

...but all anger flowed away as he realized that it wasn't morning at all. It was still the middle of night.

On the bench where he had left the fallen star sat Cordy, with the stone - or what had been the stone - in his lap.

Cordy was singing to the star, and it was singing back. It was singing with light. The entire room - and rooms beyond - and fields beyond the castle - were pulsating, glowing with the most beautiful light the Wizard had ever seen. It was terribly bright, but even when you looked at it, it didn't hurt the eye. It was more amazing than sun on new flowers. It was more breath-taking than the moonlight on the rippling ocean. It was warm and sweet and it felt... happy.

The wizard stood with his mouth hanging open, his robe's belt only half-tied. "Cordy... how...?"

The little chubby dragon looked up at his wizard, and took a breath; his song stopped, but the star continued to pulse happily in his lap. "I'm sorry I took your Hat," he said with a smile, "but I knew my song alone wouldn't be enough. She needed to remember that she wasn't alone." And with that, he resumed his song, and the star grew even brighter, and the little stars on The Hat pulsed along merrily as well, twinkling to the tune of the dragon's song.

This little fellow was created in answer to *NycterisA's challenge - I had to make something "celestial." I hope she doesn't mind that I wrote a long and boring story to go with it.

The stone was something I picked up on my weekend vacation, and I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it as soon as I found it. (I should note that while it looks like it might be turquoise, I am 100% not sure at all that it is. It was in a mixed bin of "sorta kinda gemstones" so it is more than likely just a pretty blue stone. I just know that I like blue a lot, and I wanted to use it with a cute dragon.)

Cordy is polymer clay, baked, painted, and will be glazed when I get a spare mo'. He's golden with pearly eyebrows, inner ears, wings, and claws. His horns and spikes are black with sparkling glitter. His eyes are shiny cabs, and his little pink tongue is sticking out as if he's just getting ready to do what has to be done to make his little "friend" feel safe and happy. The wizard's Hat fades from lighter metallic blue at the tip to darker blues around the bottom. The Hat has 18 Swarovski crystals embedded in it, shining like little stars.

If you are interested in this little fellow, he is $25 plus shipping. Please send me a Note!
