Fairies and their ilk are well-known for their glitter, shimmer, and sparkle. Everywhere these creatures go, a streak of shine follows.

But did you know that they aren't just born with this feature?

The fairy sparkle is achieved by bathing in the light from the Shining Orb, a precious gemstone discovered long ago by intrepid fae explorers. It is a perfectly round globe that pulses with sparkling, magical light and warmth.

Fairies collect around it in the morning and early evening, relaxing or sleeping next to its comforting shimmer.

Any fairy that spends an hour or so a day in the presence of the Shining Orb will not only feel healthier and happier; they will leave magical trails of light throughout the air as they fly.

The fairies, of course, are very protective of this majestic treasure. It just doesn't -do- to have squirrels and raccoons fall asleep near the orb and then go streaking through the forest screaming about "the colors! The COLORS!" And naturally, there are others who would just want to keep it all for themselves...

To keep the Shining Orb safe, the fairies decided to create a Perfect Protector. Something so fierce and dangerous that nobody would dare steal the orb. They worked for weeks and months, collecting this, magicking that, until they had the perfect creation... a dragon made of precious metals and gemstones.

A dragon would keep everyone away from the Shining Orb, except for the fairy folk who had built him.

At least, that was the plan. What the fairies didn't consider through all of their plotting, planning, and creating was that even a magically-made dragon, when stuck in the presence of constant overwhelming sparkling, glittering madness for 24 hours a day, would go quite insane.

This poor Perfect Protector now only sees in Sparklevision - even when he speaks, sneezes, or coughs, glitter comes out of his mouth, nose, ears, and ... other places. On the positive side, for the fairies anyway, the Protector has grown quite attached (in other words, addicted) to the Shining Orb, which does at least make him quite protective of it.
