Flail Snail by CatharsisJB Flail Snail by CatharsisJB
Apparently the Flail Snail is a D&D type of monster. I know next to nothing about D&D (other than that there used to be a cartoon on Saturday mornings with an incredibly annoying unicorn, and that Jack Chick is bent on making people believe that playing it will make you kill yourself), but I thought this little critter was funny.

Polymer clay and wire (armature and "spikes"), baked, painted, will be glazed when I am feeling less lazy.

Are there any other ridiculous D&D monsters I am missing out on? I had fun sculpting this one and it could be good practice for me :P

Ah, well D&D is filled with the weirdest crap ever imagined... maybe except the all-italian (but made famous by greeks) bonnacon (a fire-farting cow)... they did however make the Tarrasque rather famous ;) (another italian good one: a four-stories tall, two-legged crab with reflective shell and turtle head that coudl eat two cows per bite and sleep for centuries between meals... they did however make it look something more "normal")

Well the walking claw (like hand from the Addams Family, only it was a claw) the all beloved flumph (think about an acid-farting UFO with tentacles than floats thanks to a built-in "jet" system and has two antennae/eyes) or the infamous c.i.f.a.l. (colonial insect-formed artificial lifeform... the full name says it al... essentially a humanoid walking bug colony) were pretty ridiculous, even to look at, but let's not foget that there were the intelligent squirrels (kerkpa) which were exactly identical to squirrels except they wore little clothes, the animated coat (nick-named mr snuggles because it suffocated you when you wore it :XD:... ok can't remember the real name right now) the flying monkeys (... what was their names? They had webbed limbs like flying squirrels only they were monkeys) the gas spore (identical to the all-famous beholder... only it exploded when touched), the duck that was a bunny (or the other way around, because it had the special attack of confusing you when you looked at it because you couldn't understand what it looked like at any given moment, essentially they took a rather famous optical illusion and made a monster out of it), the giant space hamster (... but this one was famous for the variety of breeds, like the the miniature giant space hamster... which was a very normal looking hamster... or the winter laernian vampiric firespitting tyrannohamsterus rex... which does look like stuff that can be made nowadays with all those templates from the 3.x version), ot that moster made purely out of cluttered rags... again can't remember the name... or the aurumvorax that was an 8-legged giant otter made out of gold but still alive (that is... it was not a construct but it still was made out of gold and weighted some half metric ton).

Finally there were lots of stupid animal mixtures. They were made mostly in the style of a gryffin or Ippogryph (head or front body of an animal and the rest of another), but some were really weird: like the armadillo elephant (an elephand with armadillo-like skin that could wrap on itself and roll over you) or the owl elephant (which was an elephant with a giant owl sticked where its head would have been... wings behaving like the elephant ears, and two prehensile owl legs instead of the proboscis) or the owlbear (which was a feathered bear with an owl-looking head) or... er... the squark (a shark with squid tentacles and tentacled eyes)... well pick two random animals and stick them together in improbable ways and you get the idea.

But let's not forget about the best of them all.

The one monsters every dungeon crawler always wanted to defeat at least once.

The only one you'll ever need to call D&D "WEIRD AS SHEET" (sheets can be weird take you bed-sheets for example ;P )

The one monster that makes least sense of them all: the "gelatinous cube"... which is a 3 meters (10 feet) wide cube of self-moving jelly... and which recently came back into (in)fame because it was discovered that in the new rules they forgot to make it immune to tripping or grappling attacks... i still have to understand how can you grapple something that paralizes you when you touch it... or how can you trip a frickking 3 meters wide thing that in addition is also a CUBE... the mind wobbles...

Man. People had a lot more spare time than I did! This amazes me.

I almost kinda want to grapple a gelatinous cube. Sounds fun!

An acidic yet paralizing taste...

Uhm...

Thinking about it better the gelatinous cube maybe >wanted< to get hugged! That's why it's not immune to the grappling attack! He never got hugs when he was small so he wants to make up for it now!

And he's not immune to the tripping attack, but just because he's rather clumsy... he does not want anyone to really know about it, and relies on the fact that nobody would expect a 10 to 15 feet cube to trip in order to mantain that minimal sense of decency that helps its self-esteem.

Yesssss those are the winning tickets... the explanation to it alll... ohhh looky two nice men have just come and are giving me a new sweater.... it's all whitey and lacey... must really go with them... bye...

i definitely thought that chick book was a joke up until the very end. i was laughing so hard. then it got really gospel-y and i was like, "oh. shoot. that wasn't supposed to be funny." and then i noticed the header: "publishing gospel literature for over 40 years."

whelp, i'm going to hell now. bye guys!

Aw man. XD

I'm impressed you pulled it off the way you did! Those tentacles/flails look like they could have caused problems, but it's so darn cute. I love the colors on the shell and its beady little eyes.

Hee.

;p shows how dangerous the thing can be: if it hurts when it's an inanimated lump of clay that's about one inch long... think about how much "hurtyness" the (un)real thing can do. :XD:

Sorry... but i just love the weird stuff that D&D monster manuals can come up with.

XD Once again you did another sweetheart of a sculpture.

And hmmm.. Odd DnD monsters?

Well, there is the displacer beast [link] which is pretty much a black panther/jaguar with six legs and two squid gripper tenticles attatched to its sides/shoulders. And there is the owlbear [link] a strange mix of, you guessed it, an Owl and a bear.

Foe some reason I have heard of an owlbear before... but have never seen a picture. I imagined them as much more owl than bear. Owl-sized, with bear feet and fuzzy bear butt, and bear ears, but the rest owl.

I played D&D until a Chick publication made me kill myself.

But then I got better. And stopped reading Chick publications. I'm cured!

Looks great, JB. Undoubtedly some GM in the world is going to use this to torment his players in a lovably cute fashion.
