------
The young man, quite perturbed after a very costly visit to a wizard for a love charm that didn't quite work as intended, shuffled off instead to a local witch's hut. Much less glamorous than the beautiful stone turrets of the wizard's castle, the homely little hut seemed to be mostly made of very old wood held together with not much more than hope, and the occasional rusty metal pan covering raccoon-sized holes.

He sighed, knocked, and was ushered in by a crone that was a perfect match in every way for her home.

After explaining his predicament, the witch tutted. "What do wizards know of love? Old stuffed-shirt beards with their noses in books all day. You're fortunate to have come here, but you should have come here first," she sniffed.

The young man, foolish in love, was yet wise enough to know not to question whether a warty, wrinkled sack of bones that was so old that she audibly creaked when she walked actually knew anything of love herself.

"Now, here," she said, fishing about on some nearby shoulder-height shelves, "this is what you will need. And it will only cost you half of what you paid the wizard." She opened her palm, and a brilliant light filled the room, making the surroundings look much less squalid. There was a sound like twittering birds and running streams and gentle spring breezes.

The young man, not well-to-do by any means, was already suffering from acute emptiness of the coinpurse from the visit to the wizard. His eyes fell. "I haven't that much, I... I'm sorry."

In a flash faster than lightning, the witch's fingers, which had looked tremulous and ancient moments before, closed like iron over the object in her hand. The room dimmed again, the sounds died away. "Well! Why didn't you say. I haven't time for this nonsense. Witches have to eat too, you know."

"But..." the young man said, "perhaps I could help you here? Perhaps help re, uh, shingle your roof?" He pointed up to the ceiling, which resembled a sieve for the sunlight.

"Hmph. I can't eat manual labor. But I suppose we could work something out anyway." The crone moved her hands across a lower shelf, muttering to herself. "Ah! Now, this is the thing. You must give it as a gift to your love, and she must wear it around her neck for seven nights. Chances are good that after that, if you are around when the magic happens, she will fall in love with you."

If the young man's face was slightly crestfallen, who could blame him? For when the witch opened up her hand, there was no brilliant flash of light and no warm sounds of spring. But he was not wholly disappointed, for in her age-spotted hand was a tiny glass bottle. Attached to the stoppered container was a small heart-shaped key. "The key to her heart, you see," she chuckled to herself.

Inside, minuscule bubbles of some sort moved around, catching the light here and there. And as the young man looked closer, pinkish iridescent shapes glittered. "Oh! Are those tiny hearts? So delicately made! She would surely love to wear this."

The young man promised to be back the next morning bright and early to start work on the hut. He left with a little song upon his lips.

Of course, the witch, being protective of her secrets as any good (or bad) witch was, did not correct the young man when he called the shapes "hearts." Certainly, they were heart-shaped... no matter, they always made that mistake.

When the currently ground-bound fairies finally caught up to whoever had their wings stored en masse in a jar around the neck, though, they'd certainly be angry enough to punish them. They would bite and kick and scratch the girl, until, surely, she would run for protection in the arms of the young man.

"Ahhh. True love," the witch sighed dreamily. "Nothing like a little terror to jump-start it."
